Product Description

Thomas Clark Durant, a leading figure in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad, turned his attention to the east-west Adirondack railroad project in 1863, a line that he felt would turn the North Woods into a "suburb of New York." The only phase of his ambitious plan even carried out was a 60-mile segment of rail from Saratoga to North Creek. It survived until the 1950s when competition from the automobile caused it to shut down. Black and white photographs, maps. 15 pages. Softcover. 1961. 4th printing, 1998.
